When chance does things well
Céline Fafard didn't always plan to become a ceramist. It was chance that led her in this direction, following an outing with friends in a ceramic café. She immediately felt that ceramics was a type of work that resonated with her. “This coincidence happened at the right time.
Céline obtained her technical training in ceramics from the Center de Céramique Bonsecours, in partnership with the Cégep du Vieux Montréal, in 2010. She then founded her company, named Parceline, and began producing various ceramic objects and selling them for decades. arts and crafts fairs. Then, five years ago, she went on maternity leave, and had to rethink how to reconcile her new reality as a mother with the objectives of her company.
This is how Céline started her Etsy shop , which gives her more flexibility and consistency. The platform also allows him to sell internationally and his products are very popular with buyers from the United States. Céline also recently opened her own transactional website and distributes her creations in various boutiques across the province. It suits her, since she prefers to indulge in the creative side of her work. “I'm more comfortable in my workshop than doing customer service. »
A rise in popularity during the pandemic
It's no surprise that products sold by Parceline have been all the rage during the pandemic; after all, who didn't want to renew their decoration while we were all locked up at home? A cachepot for the plant you just bought to brighten up your home and will definitely keep alive? Yes! Knitting bowls for your new hermit hobby? Why not? According to Céline, this sensation is linked to the usefulness and affordability of the merchandise. “It's a product to have fun, not too expensive, and used daily at home. »
This popularity is not without its challenges, however. Indeed, Céline working alone most of the time, she had difficulty keeping up with demand when sales doubled. “The demand was greater than the limit (…), everyone started wanting to change their interior. »
A job that requires discipline
That said, she doesn't mind working independently. She considers her business model to be organized and efficient, which allows her to have a good turnover by carrying out all the necessary tasks, including the acquisition of raw materials, the design and manufacture of objects, the management of social media and website and customer service. “I wear all the hats of the company. His vision for his company and his sense of planning help him stay on course in order to accomplish his projects.
This is all the more important for a mother of two young children with a partner who works the day. Céline makes sure to follow a stable schedule and to structure her activities according to the time of year and the project to be completed. “I plan ahead, I know where I'm going. »
A promising future
In the short term, Céline is preparing for the holiday season online sales and is considering participating in a face-to-face event if the opportunity arises. She also plans to develop a new collection of products in the year 2022. “I lean towards interior decoration objects. I want to explore different shapes, colors and ideas never brought to market. »
By the end of the year, Parceline will leave her current studio, which she shares with fellow ceramists, and move into a new space all her own. The new premises will be located at Chat des Artistes, in Montreal, and will create a larger space, a bright, warm and better equipped environment to welcome customers and visitors.
