Slowly, autumn is settling in Quebec. A season that I adore, not only for the incredible colors and landscapes it offers us, but also for the beautiful comforting flavors that we often associate with this time of year. I'm thinking, among other things, of apples freshly picked from the orchards, of hot spices such as cinnamon or nutmeg, of the pumpkin found in all the sauces or creamy squash soups. Fall flavors that warm and feel good!
A few of our local businesses offer interesting food products that go very well with the season. Discover my selection that will make your mouth water, I'm sure!
Apple Pie Spread – La Transformerie
This non-profit organization is on a mission to reduce food waste by collecting unsold food from grocery stores that would otherwise end up in the trash. After sorting, more than half of the still edible food will go to food relief organizations. Some fruits “rescued” by the Transformerie will be used to prepare delicious spreads, including the apple pie. Enjoy on a slice of bread, on a cracker with a piece of cheddar or to accompany meat, such as pork or chicken.
Autumn honey – Le Petit Rucher du Nord
Located in Brébeuf, in the Laurentians, this beekeeping farm produces honey and reusable packaging made from beeswax. Harvested in August and September, fall honey is made from the nectar of flowers like goldenrod or aster and has a warmer, tangier taste. There are plenty of ways to cook honey, like this excellent recipe for Candied Autumn Vegetables in the oven, honey and spices, which is quite easy to make and highlights seasonal vegetables.
Apple-cinnamon and beetroot oatmeal – Gruo
Gruo is the good oatmeal we know, but revisited! Made with organic and simple foods, it's a healthy breakfast or snack that surprises with its unusual flavors. Perfect for fall and very comforting, the apple, cinnamon and beet mix will bring a little color to your bowl of oatmeal.
Salty granola – crispy coconut and chipotle – The kitchen by Marie-Ève Langlois
A very different version of the sweet granola we are used to seeing! Pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, spices and oats will add a bit of crunch and spice to your dishes and are a wonderful addition to salads, hummus, soups and fish.
Pumpkin syrup, apple, spices – Djinn Syrups
Primarily, people use syrups to make cocktails, but they can also be used to add flavor to coffee, hot chocolate or a glass of milk. That's what I had in mind when I thought of Djinn's Pumpkin, Apple and Spice Syrup , which seems to be super comforting! It also goes very well with whiskey and rum, due to its sweet and spicy side.
