Moodgie: at the heart of business

Moodgie : au coeur des entreprises

Moodgie candles not only smell good, they promote healthy values and collective well-being. That's why the company donates 1% of its sales to the Canadian Mental Health Association, which works to promote mental health, prevent mental illness, and support recovery and resilience so that all Canadians to develop fully.

Learn more about the company by reading the following interview, where Joël Gamache, founder, tells us about his journey as an entrepreneur and the road traveled since the beginning.

Who are you? Why did you choose this field?

My name is Joël Gamache and I am the founder of Moodgie. On the eve of my thirties, I had a wake up call . I had everything to be happy: a stable relationship, a house, an electric car and so on, but I wasn't. I hit a wall. And there came 2020 and the pandemic. I found myself out of a job (a job I didn't really like) and took an enforced break. I've always had a passion for candles, so I started watching videos and reading blogs to learn about candle making. I did some tests and I got the bug. I have sold some to my family, friends and acquaintances. My candles were so popular that I thought there was huge potential! Towards the end of 2020, I finally took the plunge and decided to become an entrepreneur and start Moodgie.

What was the trigger that pushed you to go into business?

The need to be in action after the “inaction” of the CERB. I had to do something to upgrade myself and I couldn't see myself going back to my old job. I always wanted to be an entrepreneur, but I didn't know in what field.

What is the most memorable moment in your career as an entrepreneur?

Having the keys to my manufacturing workshop (shared at the start) in your hands. It was the first real official step of my company.

What motivates you at work right now?

I am my own boss and I have full control over my project and my life. I do it for myself and for my clients. I love knowing that I have an impact on the well-being of my clients. It is also the pride of being able to make something grow from an idea.

What playlist accompanies your days these days?

In general, it's pop music, but Celine Dion has the monopoly.

Looking back, would you have done anything differently?

Despite the perilous path to get where I am, I am proud of how far I have come and I would do the same again!

What advice would you give to someone just starting out?

Stop comparing yourself to other companies on social media, because everything always looks impeccable with others when we all go through more difficult times on occasion. Also, to be constant, persevering and to believe in what you are doing. In closing, I would also say not to stop at the multiple “no” that people will say to you.

What is your wildest dream with the company?

See my products in major retailers in the United States and Europe.

What can we wish you for the future?

Let it continue! More collaborations, more points of sale, and to be the benchmark for benevolent candles in Quebec and Canada.

Many thanks to Joël Gamache for his generosity and his time for this interview.
