Creating offers the possibility for Sophie Marcoux to do what she wants and to explore new avenues. Thanks to her company Sofs , she can give free rein to her imagination by offering unique and different products from what we are used to seeing.
Sofs mainly offers printed patterns to make your own decorative objects in paper and wood. Although today she mainly highlights the 3D side, Sophie's entrepreneurial journey began in 2008 with fabric bags and pouches. Curious by nature, she then became interested in different types of creative hobbies. This has caused Sofs to evolve a lot over time and several products have therefore been added to its store.
A creator with multiple interests
Sophie is a jack-of-all-trades, whether in art or in life in general. She has a deep desire to create and loves using multiple techniques. This can be seen when visiting their website, which is divided into three main sections: Paper Planet (paper and graphic design), Fabric Sphere (fabric) and WoodLand (wood).
This former professional skier also studied psychology and worked for a long time as a manager. A very heterogeneous career, but very useful, because thanks to this background, she learned the basics to manage her business! In addition, her experience as an athlete led her to develop her self-taught side, since she traveled a lot during the school year and had to manage to learn the subject on her own.
Take the big leap
After stepping down from the management job she had held for over 15 years, Sophie started working full-time at Sofs in 2018 . Uncertain of wanting to take the leap, it was after a long reflection and a fear of regretting not having done so that she chose to go for it. "Even though I knew I had to find something that would bring me more personal fulfillment one day, I didn't have the strength to take the leap," she explains. It was when she got a promotion at work that she realized that she was " getting more and more away from whois and life thatwants to live." Her career change paid off, because soon at the age of 50, Sophie finally found what she really wanted to do with her life!
Learn to become an entrepreneur
Although Sofs has been around for over ten years and business is going very well, being an entrepreneur has its share of challenges for Sophie Marcoux. His curiosity and desire to learn allow him to play his role well and acquire the knowledge necessary to run his business. She confides in me that “making money” with Sofs is not her favorite part of dealing with it the most. What excites her the most is to share her creations as much as possible. Fortunately, Sophie is well surrounded to help her in business: “I have super generous friends who teach me all sorts of things that help me in sales”.
Head full of projects
Overflowing with ideas, Sophie tells herself that she must be careful not to put too much on her shoulders to be sure to excel in what she already does. Eventually, she would very much like to integrate new 3D products, such as giant wooden and metal animals, and ceramic objects. In addition, she is interested in electronics, a technology she would like to explore in the future in order to design various animated objects.
Asking her what her dream would be, the entrepreneur told me about a project she had in mind for several years. “I would like one day to open a “makerspace” (digital manufacturing workshop), but more artistic and focused on interior decoration. A huge space with several sections and tools where people could be members, buy materials and sell their items”.
Sofs creations can be found online and in several stores in Quebec, as well as in a few stores elsewhere in Canada. The entrepreneur remains open to expanding her points of sale, but for the moment, local sales suit her perfectly!
