Cindy Labrecque is a multidisciplinary artist who defines herself as an artist and ceramist. Although she uses many artistic mediums such as photography, printmaking and drawing, it is ceramics that takes up the most space in her practice. Ceramic work constantly fascinates and surprises her since it is impossible to foresee everything. Discover this artist and the magic around her works.
Before getting to where she is today, Cindy did several studies in the artistic field. She first did a technique in crafts with a ceramics option and then completed a bachelor's degree in visual arts. During her university studies, she focused on photography and video, but she returned to her first love afterwards: ceramics. She had the idea of transposing the images she captures by printing them on her ceramic creations. Following these trainings, she had the opportunity to take part in fairs and exhibitions throughout Quebec, allowing her to discover her art.
She now works full time in her own studio, but to get where she is today, she was very persistent. She indeed had to leave the job of graphic designer that she occupied a few years ago in order to concentrate on her projects and be able to live from her art.
An influence marked by its origins
Cindy is originally from Lac-Etchemin, a small municipality located in the Chaudière-Appalaches region. His origins are reflected in his works with his marked interest in wide open spaces and nature. Her “Les Animaux de chez nous” collection is inspired by books on Quebec wildlife that she had at home when she was a child. Although Cindy is inspired by these books, it is also important for her to want to draw them and to feel challenged by their illustrations. Otherwise, she's not as motivated.
The image is very important in his artistic approach. She combines it with ceramics using a technique called decal. She prefers to use shapes that are clean and that's why she naturally used black and white. This choice also comes from the fact that she has always liked black and white photographs and that she first learned silver photography. For her, black and white brings a form of rest, of visual calm and it is for this reason that she transposed it to her ceramics.
A traditional profession
The profession of ceramist is considered a traditional profession. While today with automation and production line everything is done very quickly, Cindy takes the time to manufacture each of her parts. It is essential for her to derive pleasure from the practice of her profession. She appreciates the fact of living more simply and at the same time, of consuming less, but better by using objects that are meaningful and that have been made with passion. The creative and manufacturing process for each piece takes several hours from drawing to printing to ceramic making.
Cindy continues to be amazed when she opens the oven after cooking and discovers the fruit of weeks of work or when she sees her drawings come to life. These small pleasures are the reason why she creates her works. You can discover her creations and get them right here and if you want to learn more about this artist, consult her member profile .
